Out of a 110-unit order of Dell Optiplex 790 slimlines back in August 2011, we have had about 15-20 power supply failures so far. Dell will quickly repair them, but won't let on if there's a problem with this model's power supply. It's almost always the power supply, sometimes it's the board and power.

We are a K-12 school district and have decided, because of other issues, to stop buying Dell laptops (switching staff to IPads). We're starting to wonder if we should be finding another desktop vendor as well.

The systems are using an xp image we built using Dell's drivers. About 40 or so have been deployed and all are used to access apps on a Citrix farm. Nightly virus scans are the heaviest use the local disks get. We've been unable to identify the cause of the fragmentation and just had one that defragmenting didn't resolve. The system was reimaged and has been working without problem since.
Of the systems that defragmenting alleviated the problem, not one has had it recur since we scheduled weekly defrags. All 40+ systems are using the exact same image, but only 4 or 5 have had a problem. These were geographically dispersed so I don't specific end user practices to be the root of the problem.

How's this coming so far? How'd you identify extreme fragmentation? Are you using the dell oem image straight out of the box or your own custom image?

I didn't remove any soldered components. YMMV, but I experienced no problems leaving it on.

So, did you remove the Lithium Battery on the Formatter Board or did you bake that too? The Battery is soldered to the Motherboard.

One of my 3 week old USFF 790's just died - crackling sound and a electrical burning smell. Now it has a flashing amber lightt, no post, no diagnostics, no video. Dell is pretty quick to get a new powersupply out but, sheesh, come on! Only have a couple in production, but I will definitely look at another model when it comes time to order more.
