Tired of the “normal” keychain or keyfob that does little more than decorate your pocket full of keys? Take a look at some of the tactical keychains that offer more utility than just keeping your keys organized. Why not add a little more function to something you have in your pocket already? Tactical and self-defense keychains increase your preparedness and also just come in handy when you need them!
The old standard keyring was just a coiled ring of spring steel that kept your keys in one place. They varied in size from a half-inch to an inch and a quarter and were nearly painful when you needed to add or remove keys. Quality ranged from the freebies from dealerships or repair shops to heavy rings that would leave a dent in your floor. The keychain was the next step and they usually carried a sports team logo, or maybe the ironic bottle opener. (Really? a bottle opener on a keychain. I never understood that train of thought)
Tactical keychains are the logical evolution of key retention. Although the word “tactical” gets thrown about and labelled on everything today, the word tactical means ““. You may not be a military officer, but a plan of action toward a desired end should apply to everyone.
There are a few different variations of “tactical” when it comes to keychains, namely preparedness and self-defense. A keychain directed toward preparedness might provide additional tools on it to complete tasks, like a screwdriver, length of cord or prybar. A keychain more geared for self-defense may be designed in a specific shape to comfortable fit in the hand as a makeshift defensive weapon.
Examples of Tactical Keychains
Self-Defense Tactical Keychains
Self-defense keychains come in all shapes and sizes, but are intended to do at least one of several things – deter, alert or actively defend. Examples of self-defense keychains include pepper spray, siren alerts and palm stick / kubaton design.
Pepper spray is legal to carry in most states and keychain manufacturers have made capsicum pepper defense sprays in canisters only an inch or two long. While it only contains enough of the tear and mucus inducing spray to immobilize one or two attackers, the capsicum sprays are small enough to fit into a purse or pocket and will give a few extra moments to get away from the threat.
Siren keychains are ear-piercing noise makers that, in addition to possibly startling the attacker, draw attention from others in the area. These usually produce a siren tone in the range of 120db that would be absolutely deafening in close proximity. While they may draw attention, they don’t provide the level of defense provided by capsicum spray or the kubaton.
Kubaton Tactical Keychains are usually in the shape of a 3″-4″ stick with two smaller ~1″ sticks protruding from one side. They can be made of metal, plastic or even wood. Unless they are pointed, they typically are not regarded as weapons. Some kubaton keychains are simply a pointed metal cylinder about 3/8″ in diameter by a few inches long.
Preparedness Tactical Keychains
These tactical keychains usually include built-in tools that can be used when no others are available, on a hike, hunt or other outdoor activity. Some keychains are made of paracord or other rope material that can be used to lash branches or poles into a makeshift tent or lean-to. Some even include a full on emergency kit wrapped into the keychain itself. Everything from fishing hooks to firestarters to a compass can be built in without making them too large or bulky. Gerber makes a very slim, inexpensive model called the Gerber Shard. It’s nothing more than a very thin keychain with a built in can opener, prybar, philips and flatblade screwdrivers as well as a wire stripper.
