404 errors and 404 headers

I was working on one of my other websites over the weekend and decided to customize the 404 not found error page. There are a lot of reasons to do this, but mine was the fact I had re-organized some of my content and wanted visitors to find my main page. Have you ever done this with apache? Here’s how I did it. A computer I was working on still kept randomly redirecting to a locally generated web page stating “Insecure Internet Activity, Threat of Virus Attack”. Read the rest of this entry »

SATA drivers and reloading Windows XP

a quick reminder to those who are reinstalling Windows XP on newer hardware. Unless Service Pack 3 is slipstreamed into your install disc, you may get an error about how Windows can’t find a hard disk to install to.

The “problem” lies in the fact that newer hardware uses SATA hard disks and requires windows drivers that weren’t available when XP was released. Find your hardware manufacturer’s website, download the latest SATA driver for your system and put it on a floppy disk or slipstream it into your install with nLite.

If you use the floppy method, you’ll have to hit F6 when prompted at the beginning of the XP install to load additional drivers, then choose the driver off the floppy. Slipstreamed drivers should be detected and used as needed.

another website project

If you like listening to old radio programs (the lone ranger, the shadow, etc), you might like one of my latest projects. I started DownloadRadioShows.com to make available old time radio programs that most folks charge for.

Don’t misunderstand, there’s nothing wrong with someone charging for them, but I have the space available and thought there might be some people that aren’t able to order CDs from other sites. Check it out if you have time. It uses php and a mysql backend, with the links using some of apache’s nicer features.

If there’s someone out there that want’s to be a part, let me know. I have nearly 20GB of files in all, but they aren’t all available yet.

Army Men RTS dll call crashed resolution

For those that still want to play Army Men RTS on their modern systems, you may have a problem installing the game. After you accept the installation terms and EULA, an error appears with the message that a dll call has crashed. From my investigation, I believe this to be due the amount of memory on the system installing the game. Here’s the (somewhat) simple solution. Read the rest of this entry »

never forget your toothbrush

While traveling this week, I forgot my toothbrush. I’ve needed to use the “complimentary” items hotels offer before, but it’s always been just shampoo or a comb. After this week, I’m duct taping a toothbrush to the inside of my suitcase so it will always be there. Read on for why. Read the rest of this entry »

Awesome wireless installation

Take a guess at what wireless router lies above the ceiling tileOk, I am staying at a hotel this week and they offer high-speed wireless internet. The hotel isn’t that bad, but their method of wireless installation leaves a little to be desired.

Can anyone guess what wireless router is upside down above the ceiling tile? I would also guess it took about 10 minutes per access point to install these, and I saw two in the same hallway which would make me believe the whole place was done this way.
