Unknown Error in Microsoft Outlook 2003
Every get one of those terribly specific errors from a software application? You know, the ones that tell you something has gone wrong, but doesn’t say what went wrong?
I recently tried to archive a mailbox in Outlook 2003 and got the error..wait for it… “Unknown Error”. Literally, that’s all there was to it, no codes, no indication of where the error occurred, nothing. Here’s how I went about solving it.I was in an enterprise environment so I started checking the Exchange server for any errors. Nothing there. I then checked the fileserver I was archiving to. Nothing there. Next, I checked my local machine’s eventlogs. nothing there, either.
I started picking through the mailbox I was archiving from and started moving messages to the archive folder one at a time. Finally, I found the one that gave me the same “Unknown error” message. I couldn’t move it, couldn’t delete it, couldn’t forward it, but I could read it. (odd) I then decided since Outlook 2003 was giving the error, I would attack it from a different angle. I opened Outlook Web Access and found the email. I was able to delete it there, and after removing it from the deleted items through the same OWA interface, my mailbox was able to be archived.
Oh well, just a tip on how to resolve this if you ever encounter it.
