Office Genuine Advantage program screws up

21 April, 2008 (09:01) | not fun, software | By: bbowers

Remember the Office “Genuine Advantage” notifications from a few weeks back? Guess what, they had problems..just like the Windows Genuine Advantage rollout.

Turns out the update went to “managed clients inside and outside of these intended countries” (emphasis, mine) according to a post on Microsoft’s WSUS Product Team blog. According to Joe Wilcox at Microsoft Watch, the delivery of this update outside the planned scope is either intentional or incompetent. I tend to agree. Remember all of the false-positives from the Windows Genuine Advantage program? I supspect we’ll see those with this too.

As Joe also points out, it coincidentally is released just prior to Microsoft’s end-of-year crunch for renewing volume licensing accounts. What better way of pushing subscribers than to have false-positives rush them into upping their renewals?
