Firefox 2.0.0.13 hangs with looking up website
There’s a bug I’ve encountered with Firefox 2.0.0.13 that causes the web browser to hang with “looking up” and then the website I’m visiting in the status bar. It will sit there for minutes just doing nothing, and even trying to visit a different site doesn’t snap it out of its trance.
I started troubleshooting and found out that my network connection is fine, I can even ping the site I’m trying to access. I can check mail and all with Thunderbird, so the problem is definitely related to Firefox. Read on for some more details and the resolution in case you are experiencing the same thing.
I also found that I could close and reopen Firefox and it would immediately work correctly. Other computers in the house worked fine and I wasn’t experiencing any other problems on the computer. Disabling my addons didn’t make it any better.
To resolve it, I ran “firefox -p” to bring up firefox’s profile manager. I created a new profile and haven’t had any more recurrences to this point. After exporting my bookmarks to my new profile, I deleted my old one. I am slowly adding my Firefox extensions back in to see if they cause any problems.
