free tool to backup your windows hardware drivers

19 March, 2008 (11:36) | computers, software | By: bbowers

Every few years I get the itch to rebuild my Windows XP system. Believe it or not, it usually goes that long without any problems, but then something runs afoul and I decide to bite the bullet. The most annoying part of rebuilding a system is finding the drivers for all of your hardware. I obviously had them at once, but two years makes for plenty of time to lose or misplace a drivers CD.  Now, it’s a lot easier to backup your drivers prior to reinstalling Windows. Read on for the scoop.

A free tool called Driver Max makes driver backup a breeze. All you have to do is install and run the tool and it will locate all of the drivers currently used by your Windows XP, Vista, or 2003 machine.

The main screen looks like this when you run the application:

all you have to do is click Export Drivers and it will step you through the wizard. Just decide whether you want them placed into a folder, or exported to a ZIP compressed file.

Burn the drivers to a CD and you are ready to rebuild.
