Block bad software, spyware and adware while surfing

2 March, 2008 (13:33) | internet, security, software, tips | By: bbowers

Prevention is always easier than cleaning a computer, here’s how to keep your PC clean.

First, you need to have good anti-virus software and you need to keep it updated. If it says it is scheduled to update, check up on it just to be sure. I’ve found the corporate edition of antivirus software to be the lightest in memory usage and cpu usage, so if you work in an office environment check to see if your employer purchased extra antivirus licenses for their employees to use at home. Many places do.

Second, if you can, use Firefox, it makes it much easier. For Firefox, add the No-Script addon and learn to configure it. This add-on keeps Javascript from running by default and only allows it per site, and only after you ok it.
Whether you use Internet Explorer, Opera, or Firefox, I suggest you download the free tool Spybot, Search and Destroy as a clean-up tool. It will clean about 75% of anything that does manage to get to your system. If it doesn’t clean it the first time, you may want to boot to Safe-mode by pressing F8 prior to the Windows startup screen appearing, and choosing safe-mode from the option list.
